Paola Santiago series

All you need to know about

PAOLA SANTIAGO

Author : Tehlor Kay Mejia

Twelve-year-old Paola Santiago and her best friends, Dante and Emma had one rule to follow: Stay. Away. From. The. River.
An unusual rule, considering rivers are usually harmless (unless it's about to sweep you away), but ever since a schoolmate of theirs drowned in the river a year back, the kids were expressly forbidden from stepping foot near the banks. Paola's mom had been warning her about the river even before, as she was convinced that La Llorona, the wailing woman, lurked in the river's murky water, dragging any unsuspecting victim in at the first chance. For a girl like Pao, who believed in science and nothing but science, her mom's superstitious warnings were ridiculous, and a source of great embarrassment.
Well, too bad the river was the perfect spot for stargazing.
As Pao, Dante and Emma make plans to meet up at the river banks one night to stargaze with her new telescope, things go wrong when Emma goes missing and her belongings are found near the river.
As Pao and Dante gear up to venture on their own to find their friend, Pao realizes that her mother's warnings had been right all along and that there was a whole different world out there, a world Pao knew nothing about.
And Pao did not like not knowing things.
As the two kids get dragged further and further into the world of magic and monsters, Pao and Dante must learn to trust each other, be wary of their new supposed allies, and not stray away from their ultimate goal.
Even harder, Pao must throw all logic and science out of the window, and enter the unpredictable and mysterious world of monsters, spirits, and ghosts, where the scariest myths and legends she knew lived, and find Emma before it was too late.
Sure, what could go wrong?

The Paola Santiago series is published under Rick Riordan Presents, the line publishes books that utilize the mythology of various cultures and countries in its storytelling akin to Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson, but written by a variety of different authors. After all, it is definitely not possible for Riordan to write about every Mythology in the world. But, it is to be kept in mind that the Paola Santiago series does not have any connection whatsoever to the Percy Jackson series.
The series is a modern spin-off based on Mexican folklore and mythology. The final book of the trilogy, the Sanctuary of Shadows, is set to be published on 2nd August 2022.

My Comments

The Paola Santiago series was the second series I read under the Rick Riordan Presents imprint after the Aru Shah series, and I'm happy to say that it did not disappoint. Pao's character was one I found really relatable, and quite enjoyable as well. It had all the elements that made Percy Jackson such an amazing read, such as the humor, the action-packed fights, and the impeccable plot. Tehlor had taken a huge chunk of Mexican folklore and had added her own special twist to it, turning the book into one extraordinary adventure. The book also bought other important issues and the hard truths of life to light, such as the injustices of racism, and the fact that nobody is perfect, that greed and pride are parasites that can influence anyone, even the ones you love and trust.
All in all, the Paola Santiago series is a must-read for fans of Percy Jackson, and an incredible series to try for readers of ages 12 and above.
