THE LUNAR CHRONICLES

Author : Marissa Meyer

If you can imagine classic fairytales such as Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Snow White, set in the future with androids, space ships, cyborgs, lethal plagues and evil tyrant rulers of the Moon, you have a pretty good idea of how spectacular the Lunar Chronicles is.
Set thousands of years into the future, in the city of New Beijing, Linh Cinder is a sixteen year old cyborg mechanic, with a reputation to be the best. But it was still slightly startling to see Prince Kaito, the Crown Prince of the Eastern Commonwealth (An empire that was once called Asia.) at her booth, requesting her to fix his personal android, Nainsi. Cinder agrees to fix the android before the Annual Ball, which was fast approaching.
Kai, on the other hand, had problems of his own. His father, Emperor Rikan, was sick with Letumosis, the dreaded plague with tormented the entire planet. The malicious Queen Levana, the evil queen of Luna (Luna, as in, the Moon, which had been colonized.) was requesting an alliance with the Commonwealth. Kai, desperate to find a solution, was in search of Princess Selene, the supposedly deceased heir of Luna. (Which is weird, seeing as the she died when she was young, rumored to be murdered by Levana, but read the story to find out!)
Nainsi had apparently got some intel on the lost princess, but had started malfunctioning. Now that the Emperor's condition had gotten worse than ever, chances of Kai ascending the throne soon seemed imminent, and to Kai's dismay, inevitable.
But when Cinder's step-sister Peony gets infected with Letumosis, Cinder is given up for the Plague Research by her cruel step-mother. (Yup, Adri's the best mom ever.)
But while Cinder is fighting for her life, she discovers that things are not what they seem. None of what she knew and thought could be true anymore. She was a danger to everyone, even herself.
Conspiracies are afoot, and lives are in danger, and she might be stuck in the midst of it, in crossfire.
Can Cinder and Kai save themselves from the disaster they were heading into? Or will their own safety not matter anymore, with millions of lives on the line?
But soon, they will not be the only ones fighting...

ALL BOOKS IN ORDER

  • Cinder
  • Scarlet
  • Cress
  • Fairest (can be read after Winter)
  • Winter
  • Stars Above (novella)
The final book of the series, Winter, was released on November 10, 2015.
Fairest, the events of which occur years before the events of Cinder, can be read after Winter or between Cress and Winter. It will not affect the plot of the series, but the book should NOT be read before Cinder, as it may contain spoilers.
Stars Above is a set of nine short stories, some of which provide a deeper insight into some of the character's pasts. It must be read after Winter, though some of the stories occur before the incidents of the series, but the story "Something old, Something new" occurs two years after the events of Winter.
A graphic novel of two volumes, Wires and Nerves, was released on January 31, 2017. It occurs right after Winter, hence must be read after.

My Comments

The Lunar Chronicles series was an enthralling experience and was one of the best and most fascinating series I had ever read. The idea of my favorite fairytale characters in the future with quirky robots and gadgets and working against a tyrant queen was irresistible for me, and once I started reading, I was not disappointed. Cinder is easily one of my favorite characters, with her snarky and quick-witted personality and her courage and confidence, but it was extremely hard to choose as all of them are fascinating in one way or the other. The stories of all of the protagonists were entwined from page one, and the complexity of the plot was engrossing and spellbinding. What with Cinder's determination, Scarlet's fierce nature, Cress's intelligence and Winter's innocence, each of the characters kept me hooked from the beginning and will forever be in my memory and my heart. All in all, the Lunar Chronicles series is a great read for teens and adults alike, and best suited for readers of ages 13 and above.

NOTE: Although this does not have any connection to the Lunar Chronicles, to all the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them readers, this is to inform that it has announced that screenplay and movie 3 of the Fantastic Beasts series will be released on 15th April 2022.

And yes, the series is rather amazing, and you are not the only one waiting for a movie! It would be SUPREMELY cool to see the Lunar Chronicles in live action, but fingers crossed that it remains accurate to the books!
