The Fablehaven series

All you need to know about

FABLEHAVEN

Author : Brandon Mull

Thirteen year old Kendra and ten year old Seth are polar opposites of each other. While Kendra is a a staunch follower of rules and the responsible and studious one of the family, Seth is a notorious troublemaker, and considers breaking rules to be his greatest hobby. But both of them, for once, were on the same side of the page. Both of them were disgruntled about staying back at their grandparent's house while their parents leave for their 17-day cruise.
It wasn't a horrifying prospect on the whole, but Kendra and Seth never really knew their grandparents properly, and had only ever seen them very rarely. And they had never really visited them, which made Kendra quite apprehensive about what to expect. Seth was not quite so tensed. He was too busy bouncing about and fooling around.
Once they had arrived, and their parents had left, Grandpa Sorenson had started spouting the ground rules, which included not entering the woods under any circumstances as there were disease causing tics in the woods adjoining the house. The kids also noticed him being rather vague about their missing grandmother, informing them that she was visiting a relative. (Sure, none of this was mysterious AT ALL.)
But of course, Seth was not called a rule breaker for nothing.
His curiosity was instigated, and Seth promptly took a forbidden expedition into the forest, and encountered an old woman in a shack, who tried to entice him inside. Creeped out by the experience, Seth returned home and tried to persuade Kendra to come with him this time. But Grandpa Sorenson discovers that Seth had ventured into the woods and grounds the children for a few days.
But while Seth had been determined to disobey, Kendra had discovers clues in her room, which led to her discovering an instruction to "drink the milk". Kendra then spies Dale, Grandpa's hired man, leaving a tin of milk out in the open, which the butterflies in the garden seem to like very much. Deducing this, Kendra realizes that she must drink this milk according to the instruction.
Kendra then persuades Seth to drink this milk, and then discovers that the butterflies in the garden were in fact actual fairies and Grandpa Sorenson was the caretaker of Fablehaven, a sanctuary for magical creatures. A job that came with a high amount of unpredictable calamities and hazards, but hey, what's life without a little risk?

Thus begins Kendra and Seth's wild and magical adventures at Fablehaven, where the kids must train as the future caretakers of the sanctuary, and uncover secret artifacts, defeat magical plagues, invade dragon sanctuaries, and ultimately prevent the dangerous Society of the Evening Star from rising and achieving their paramount scheme.

My Comments

The Fablehaven series is one of the best fantasy-genre series I have ever read, with excellent plot line, fantastic characters and a formidable antagonist. Reading the books kept me on the edge of my seat and I really enjoyed the interactions and relationships between the characters. The best thing about the books was the fact that none of the characters were perfect, they all made various mistakes and some of the mistakes even resulted in catastrophic events. But it highlighted the fact that everyone makes mistakes and the important thing was accepting it and setting it right. The series can be described using many words, but boring is not one of them. The Fablehaven series is spell binding and stimulating, and could even rival JK Rowling's Harry Potter series.
This series is best suited for readers aged 9 and above, though in reality it primarily depends on the reader's choice.

  2. Dear Rajamma(Hakansh as Diwakar). I have rather amused and interested in your comments over those books you have read. Particularly the word Antogonists, Really my memories flown to the Historical Speeches of Dr. C N A in the Parliament "" CARRY ON BUT REMEMBER". In his speech He used the words PROTOGONISTS and ANTOGONISTS. The very word you have used . Best wishes. (Thatha.) G.Prakasam.
