The Tale of Magic series
All you need to know about
A TALE OF MAGIC
Author : Chris Colfer
Note: The Tale of Magic series is a prequel to the Land of Stories series, and must be read after the Land of Stories.
Fourteen year old Brystal Evergreen is a young girl living in the Southern Kingdom, where magic is outlawed and those who practice magic are punished with death. In the Southern Kingdom, women are also stripped of all rights, including the right to work and even the right to read. Due to both her father and her brothers being highly respected Justices, this law was enforced rather rigidly in Brystal's household. Despite the odds, Brystal is a voracious reader and never really fits-in at her school where young girls are taught "How to be a Proper Women".
When her family finds out she had been reading books against the law, Brystal starts getting desperate for new books to read. Finally, she finds the perfect solution to her problem and decides to work as a maid at the library, while telling her parents that she had started "Community Service" everyday after school. (Which basically lying blatantly to her parents to throw off their scent that she is doing something illegal, but hey, a girl's gotta read.)
After many close calls, Brystal discovers a highly confidential section in the library, and realises that she can perform magic when she came across a forbidden book of magic. But Brystal is then caught in the act and is sent to Bootstrap Correctional Facility. (Uh oh, busted...)
But Brystal's adventures are not over yet, as she is then rescued by Madame Weatherberry and is recruited as a student of magic. In Madame Weatherberry's academy, as Brystal soon gains interesting friends and comes to hear of a conflict in the Northern Kingdom, she finds out that one day she might have to be the teacher instead the student.
Join Brystal and her friends on their adventures in the Academy, as they uncover the secret behind the Northern Conflict and must work to destroy devious plots to unravel magic entirely and for eternity.

My Comments
A Tale of Magic series was a truly magical experience for me, and a marvelous return to the Land of Stories. Various characters from the Land of Stories make an appearance in the book and there are certain references to the original series too. Learning about the personal experiences of each character helped us get to know them better and the unique personalities of each character made for a very interesting and fun read. The story also highlighted several issues in the real world, which helps the reader empathize with the victims of such prejudices. The book was full of unexpected plot twists and made the reader anxious with suspense. All in all, A Tale of Magic is a captivating read and best suited for readers of ages 8 to 14, though it depends on the choice and preference of the reader.
Great! :)
